Every time the weather gets warmer, those little insects come out of their hiding and make staying in our homes a little less enjoyable. If you think it isn’t necessary to get rid of ants, then think again!
Ants can cause real damages to your home, especially carpenter ants. These ants nest in hollow areas and wood that is exposed to moisture and decay.
Ants can also sting and bite, which can have serious health complications. For people with certain allergies a fire ant sting can be life threatening.
The problem with getting rid of them is that you probably don’t want to use anything to endanger your kids or pets.
You can pay for a pest control specialist to handle the problem, but why bother with the expensive bill if you can do it on your own with safe alternatives.
Well guess what! You don’t need those toxic sprays and chemicals to get rid of ants. Here are a few natural DIY recipes to chase them away.
Can you believe it? Something as easy and available as lemon juice can indeed help you get rid of ants. Take a cup of pure lemon juice and put it in a clean spray bottle. Spray the openings where the ants are. Apparently, the acids in lemons ruin their tracking sense.
Baking Soda and Sugar
All you’ll need for this recipe is equal amounts of powder or grained sugar and baking soda. You’ll also need some clean containers with 4 or 5 holes to use as a trap.
Take 4 tablespoons of baking soda with 4 tablespoons of sugar. Mix the two together then pour it all in the container. Take a nail or any pointy metal objet, heat it a little bit then create little holes in the sides of the container a little below the top opening. Cover it with a lid and put it next to the areas where you suspect the ants to be nesting.
Sugar will attract the ants. Once they climb through the holes and eat the mix, the game is over. Another bonus, it also works against cockroaches.
Vodka and Essential Oil Spray
For this spray recipe, you’ll need: 4 fluid ounces of water, 5 drops of cinnamon essential oil, 15 drops of peppermint essential oil, and 2 tablespoons of Vodka. Put the ingredients in a clean spray bottle and shake it well. Start spraying around the infected areas, and to top it off it will also keep your home smelling fresh.
Vinegar and lemon spray
Another super duper easy way to chase the ants away is this quick vinegar and lemon spray. Mix equal amounts of lemon juice and white vinegar in a spray bottle. Shake the bottle, and start spraying around the windows and doors to keep them away. If you spot any inside, spray on the spot to kill them.
